Started teardown of a Dune VW today. The price was right, free! As you can see it has tons of Florida sun damage and tons of wear and tear from the previous owners. Who knew little girls would be so rough?!? This will eventually be dripping with testosterone for my 2-year old boy to find under the Christmas Tree

12 Volt. I plan to keep that portion of the vehicle stock for now and focus on the cosmetics. My son just turned 2 this month so he not ready for anything faster, yet.

Notice how much mold was on the car. You can see the sun damage as well by how pristine the plastic was under the stickers

To repair the sun damage I am applying a Poly-resin body fill.

Finally ready to start painting. Good to see some major visual progress. Originally wanted to go with purple as the main color with red accents, but have reversed the thinking Red with purple, silver and black.

It seems as if you painted the tires black? As another member said here (gseric69) as soon as you hit that pavement you will see the under color. In your case PURPLE.

Hope that is not the case. Used a product called Varibond.

http://www.parasolinc.com/Products.asp?ProductID=Varibond

"Varibond forms a chemical bond with the substrate. Varibond cannot be removed and will not crack, peel or flake."

Not cheap, but hopefully will do the trick.

looking super nice so far - are the tires the only thing you used that plastic dye on? how much coverage did you get out of a quart? how much do you think it would take to do an entire jeep body?

I only bought a pint. My main concern was the wheels. I had enough left over to shoot the seats, steering wheel and most of the underbody. My reviews are mixed so far. Some of the black pulled off of the underbody when I tried to tape it off. I will let everyone know how the tires hold up. I was told there was no known replacement for the purple wheels so I decided to try and find a dye to get the look I wanted. It seems the more textured the surface the better it holds.

Who makes varibond? how did it hold up on the wheels? Is it acid base like Dupont's etching primer Variprime? I've never used it on plastic but it sticks to everything i've every sprayed it on. I think they also make a flexing agent for spaying on plastic so it doesn't crack and chip off.

+2 to the last 2 posts, I'd love to know how the varibond is working AND whether Justin got his escalade wheels working.

I FINALLY scored a dune beetle, $20 and had to drive an hour away but worth it. It's complete and still had the high speed lock out in it, but the tires are rough and the body is comparable to your before picture. So I am trying to decide what course to take, do I go with different tires or try to paint these. I've got several sets of 11" tires but don't really want to go smaller unless I have to. I am planning on painting this thing like the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo for my daughter's birthday in March (yea I know it's not a van but I think it will still work )

Anyway, I am going to start a new project thread so I don't hi-jack yours

Sorry it took so long to get the photos up. Varibond was a failure.

82.29 KB

Perhaps the most frustrating thing was contacting the retailer, Parasol Inc, prior to the purchase and explaining the end use and being assured that it would hold up.

40.86 KB

I tried to get a refund due to the failure and was told that I needed to supply them with a piece of the plastic for them to analyze. Little hard to explain to a 2-yr old why you are cutting up their "new" toy, so I passed on that option.

I am still searching for a wheel that will fit and still allow me to use my VW rims. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Final verdict on Varibond...not worth the money. Final verdict on Parasol...shysters who do not know the limits of the products they sell.
