i recently made my introduction yesterday when i aquired a new to me, PW "Copper Jeep." i picked it up locally on craigslist for $30. it was in sad shape cosmetically, but that was not an issue because it is getting a total rebuild. this thread will document from start to finish (whenever that is, seeing as there is no rush to finish).

the project name "Sarge" obviously comes from "Cars" the movie. Sarge was the old WWII jeep. decided on the idea sitting at work. he is the inspiration for the build. of course this won't have the windshield eyes or grill mouth, but it will basically just resemble a military jeep with paint and decals.....now only to find "Olive Drab" Krylon Fusion paint.

18.3 KB

so here is the plan....

- tear down and clean up
- paint - olive drab
- MB jeep decals
- 18v upgrade
- working head lights
- working tail lights
- camouflage seat cover
- roll bar padding
- camouflage roll bar cover
- roll bar mounted gun - water gun! have some ideas for this
- lift
- bigger tires

stock parts to replace:
* seats - some of the clips are broken
* wheels
* tires
* seat belts
* hood hinges

Total Build Cost Tally:
$30.00 - initial purchase price
$30.08 - Krylon Fusion paint - 7 cans
$6.79 - taillights
$12.00 - jerry can and holder
$10 - SMOKA made decals
$88.87

my wife actually loved the idea too. with that support, i decided to scrap the first theme "Stealth Jeep" that would've matched my jeep.

does anyone know if you can add doors to a PW wrangler that did not come with them? i have seen them on other PW jeeps and saw them for sale on the hobbymasters website.

haven't made it to the store yet, but the krylon website is showing my worst fear so far.....they don't have an actual olive drab color in their fusion line. the closest is a hunter green. not sure that will do the trick. guess i'll have to test it out at the store.

edit: rustoleum has paint for plastics too, but same problem..only hunter green.

found this on kidswheels.com. not sure if they still carry it, but once painted to match the MB jeep, it would make a perfect military trialer look alike.

i saw that it was on the kidswheels.com website under the discontinued section, but it had a price under it so i was thinking maybe they might have some 'old stock' of it. wouldn't be a big deal not to have it, but i think it would finish it up quite perfectly. i could wire in a quick disconnect to have powered tail lights on it.

if they don't have that one, there is a john deere trailer that could work too....it just doesn't have the exact look to it.

man! this thing isn't even for me, but i want to go crazy with it.

yeah, i figure that could be the worst case scenerio. i love building stuff, so that is not the issue. however, i think i would prefer the somewhat matching look of the plastic trailer to the plastic jeep. also, assuming i made it of wood, it would likely end up weighing way more than a plastic version. it's a possibility anyway, but the trailer is more of an after thought at this point. i will keep my eyes out for one, but it's probably the last thing on the list for right now.....eventhough i want one really badly :) .

The trailer in that link is very light. It also is nice looking, being it's so "finished" looking. But it is a bit small, looks too small behind a Uni-Body Jeep even.

Building one light may not be too bad.... aluminum tubing, super thin plywood, old PW tires, etc.

Onelow66 built a nice looking flatbed in his thread: http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1964

Aaaaargh!! and the money............ £680 - that's about $3000 (well that will be the US/UK exchange rate by the time I finish typing
No really about $1300. That's a lot for a toy you have to make!!

Sorry, my kids going to get a frame welded by me, with a couple of PW bodies glued and duct taped to it! All for the pricely sum of 'as cheap as possible'.

That is funny.

Plus did you see that they said "you can use an automotive style battery."? Then they go on to say that you can use an eighty-five ah battery, but then they justify it by saying that you have to use an overflow pipe to catch the acid as it spills out. Safety first with those guys.

It's my Little Deuce Coupe...You don't know what I got.

was in dallas this weekend helping my sister move, so i wasn't home to get much demo. work done. i did finish cleaning up the dash so now ALL stickers have been removed from the whole jeep. i also got the front end taken apart....bumper removed, front sub-section removed from body, steering stem removed, and tires removed. i need to pull the tie rod off to get the whole steering assembly apart from the plastic sub-section.

this thing has dirty is hasn't even used!

next on the demo. list is pulling the rest of the rollbar (it's being stubborn), pulling the wiring and the speed shifter, and removing the gearboxes and rear tires. then it will be prepped for paint.

well i am noticing a theme here....i got a LITTLE bit of work done this evening. i do have 2 years to get this done afterall. guess it doesn't need to be completely done in a week...haha.

i finished disassembling the whole thing and gave the body parts a good high pressure hose down. i still need to get down and scrub some dirty parts and use some goo-gone or something to get some of the sticky stuff off. there is not too much of that though. it's nice to get the cobwebs off of it and the pile of dirt out.

i have been keeping all the hardware from each section in ziploc bags to keep it organized. however, i think i will probably end up replacing a good deal of the screws anyway because many of them have rust on them. although, i may just clean them up a bit and reuse.
i did notice while i finally got down to the electrical parts, that someone has messed with the wiring a bit. there was more electrical tape and rough (non factory) connections. no worries...it's all getting redone anyway. i still need to tear open the gearboxes to inspect the internals.

next step is to scrub all the parts with soapy water, dry, and then paint (after i order some krylon fusion olive drab that 'collinsmom' found).

if you are referring to the electric tape on the pedal connections, that is common and factory. the 90 deg. connectors dont come with insulation so the mfg. fixes it by taping them up from the factory.

project looking good so far. i predict you will get it done quickly and have nothing to do for about 1 3/4 years till the kid gets older. which leaves time for more power wheels modification and of course... more power wheels to add to the collection.

yeah, i can see this finishing up in no time once i actually start working on it. honestly, i would almost rather that happen. i would hate to start on it and get sidetracked and never finish, but have a pile of PW parts layin around my garage. it would probably be best just to have it completed (minus the batteries) and be ready for him. as you mention, that extra time would be good to start another PW project. wouldn't mind a car for that one.

edit: oh yeah, i am having major problems getting that main roll bar hoop out of the tub. are there any tricks to that?

some have a screw, so once you take the screw out it is a pressure fit only. just grab a hold of the bar and pull real hard, and when that doesnt work, yank harder

haha..fair enough. each side did have a screw, which i removed of course. i pulled, but i didn't want to crack the plastic, so i stopped. just wanted to make sure there was not something else connecting it. i'll give it another tug this evening.

alright, i found some time today to get to some of the fun stuff on the jeep. i gave all the body parts another good cleaning and scrubbing. while everything was drying, i ran over to walmart and picked up some krylon fusion flat olive drab paint from their "camo" line of spray paint. i was in there the other day and found that krylon makes the color i needed along with the other needed colors to make traditional camo. (colinsmom also found this online)

i basically got everything but the actual tub painted (as was the plan for today). took 3 cans to do 2-3 coats.

56 KB

67.29 KB

i ran over to autozone to look at possible light solutions. after inquiring and receiving info about doing working brake lights and tail lights, i decided i was not interested in going to the extremes needed to accomplish the brake light task. tail lights alone will be more than suitable i think. anywho, i found what i think will work out perfectly for some tail lights. without going with a flush mount round LED light at $12 each, the ones i picked up at $3 each are a great solution.

i painted the white mounting plate to match so it wouldn't stand out. i was able to use one of the original light holes to hold it in place for the sake of taking the pictures. i will need to relocate one of the mounting holes on the mounting bracket to retain the two stock holes on the tub. no big deal there.

Looking very cool. I really want to install some tailights on some of ours, just have to convince the hubby to figure out how to do it!

Glad you found the color you wanted, I never used spray paint before and was surprised it took 2 cans of each color I was using to do my project on my son's PW. I had to run back to the store for a 2nd can of each color :(

spray paint, especially for plastics, doesn't always go as far as you might think. while plastic paints are pretty efficient these days, it's usually a pretty good idea to do a few coats on plastic parts because they do still tend to chip easier than on other materials.

the lighting part is not difficult at all, but i have done quite a few aux. lighting jobs on various vehicles. i will use a switch that controls the head lights and tail lights, and they will be powered by the separate 12v battery.

I used those same lights for one of my daughters jeeps and they work great although I had to solder a ground to the metal part of the light to provide a good ground. You are doing a good job on the jeep, it is starting to look really nice and I can't wait to see the finished project.

thanks! glad to hear these lights will work out....seeing as i already painted the mount, haha. i had planned to do exactly as you mentioned (the soldering part). these won't be the first set of lights i've had to do that with.

the one thing i am concerned about it the brightness of these lights. tail lights obviously don't need to be very bright to get the job done, but i still wondered.....sarahsdad, are they sufficiently bright?

yes, for tail lights they are bright enough. Here is a picture of the back of it with the lights on for your reference.

i got some more work done on the jeep this evening. i was able to paint the tub with about 2.5 coats. i would like to add another good coat before i call it good just to give the paint some depth. it really is starting to look good though.
you'll notice i didn't paint the under side of the dash. i did paint around the openings, but i figured i wouldn't waste the paint on something you would never see. the underside of the tub is a different story. that will obviously be seen so i gave it 2 good coats and called it good. i mounted the winshield to the dash, but have not assembled anything else yet. i am going to let it dry over night and put a final coat on tomorrow after work. then let that dry for a day or so and then start reassembling everything.
anywho, here are some pics. i kinda placed things together to get a good idea of how it was coming together.
i decided to go ahead and just paint the wheels that it came with to save some money on the project. there is another style i saw on hobbymasters.com that would be near perfect, but i'm not sure if they will fit. these will do for now.
the hood is splotchy because it has a fresh coat of paint. everything 'flattens' a lot when it's dry.

adding the lights, white decals, dash stickers, and camo seat and roll bar covers will help to break up the drab, olive drab.

thanks! i hope to get that last coat of paint on the tub this evening and by sunday start putting the main pieces back together. i would also like to find the headlights and maybe get those mounted up.
i will hold off to wire anything until i have everything i want. i will draw out a wiring diagram for myself to help get things in order and to figure out what supplies i need.

i think i may have talked myself out of doing the water cannon because i just don't think i can do what i want for a reasonable enough cost.
i did however get what i think could be a good idea for an electric winch. i think i will focus on creating that instead of the water cannon.

i need to take some measurements on the jeep so i can order some decals. i am still not sure where to go/look to get custom vinyl decals made, but i know there are places out there.
i also need to order up a PW jeep decal set so i can get some new dash decals. more than anything, i need the decal with the gauges. i'll just get a full set and offer the extras to anyone that can use them.

For the winch, did you check out Giranger's Project 4-Real Jeep?

yes sir. i acutally just finished reviewing it.

what i was thinking of uses less parts, but after Giranger specifically says, "Find a motor and gearbox to pull a powerwheels." i realize that my conception would allow the spool to easily wind up, but without gearing beyond what i had planned, i'm not sure it will have the torque needed to actually pull the jeep.

a stock gearbox may just be the way i need to go about this. in actuality, i think it might just simplify my idea all together.

Coming along quite nicely. I didn't want to go spending alot of $$, the spraypaint cost enough as is, so I didn't buy any replacement decals for the dash for Colin's firetruck project, I figure he's not going to care anyways, LOL.

I do want to do a winch & water cannon possibly too, but trying to find low cost & easy solutions, as winch is for looks only, no function needed, I'll keep an eye on what you do for ideas :)

Colin's toys:
1 Sport Tracker Quad Super 6V
1 Enforcer Jr (12V Mod)
2 Jeep Wranglers 12V
1 Fire Rescue Truck 12V
1 Extreme Machine 12V
2 Ninja Quad 12V
1 Perego Gator 12V
1 Perego Gaucho 12V
1 Kidtrax Fire Engine 12V
1 CAT Dumptruck
1 Hummer H2
1 Little Tikes Indy Racecar

after you mentioned the money aspect, i added a total build cost tally at the bottom of the first post. right now, with the initial purchase price, paint, and taillights, i have spent about $67 total. i still need a hood latch, headlights, gearbox, military style decals made, three 6v batteries, maybe some dash decals, bigger tires, and i'm sure some other odds and ends including wiring. the build will easily go over $100 by the time i'm done, but considering it's such a longterm build, it doesn't really matter. it will still come out much cheaper than a brand new one from the store, but it will be totally customized.
if i have it my way, my son will not know the meaning of "stock." afterall, my favorite word is 'modified'.

oh wow, congrats, hope everything goes well :) You definitely won't get any work done on it for the next year! LOL. My son is almost 2, and I still can't find time to get much done except for right now since he's asleep :)

Congrats, now the fun really begins! Your new little one will love the jeep, the hardest part will be waiting until they are old enough before making it faster.

our son, Bryce Patrick was born 08-01-07 at 8:21pm. 7 lbs, 11 oz., 21.5" long, 3" long feet, and healthy as can be. he is the most beautiful thing i have ever layed my eyes on.
they actually had to do a semi-emergency C-section. more on that after i explain the details on everything else.....

we go to the doctor's office monday afternoon. he ruptures her membranes to speed dialation. schedules us to check in to the hospital tuesday night at 8pm. tuesday at 10:30, my wife is having horrible contractions. she calls the doc., he tells us to just go check in to the hospital then and get checked out. by 1pm, they tell us we might as well just leave and come back at 8. no sense in sitting in the hospital any longer than we absolutely need to. if she stayed, they would have to start giving her the medicine to thin out the cervex and that is a 12 hour process. that would've put that being over at 1am. then they would've started the potocin at 1am and she would have no chance of sleeping. so yeah, no brainer. my wife wanted to leave, go have a good "last meal" and get some relaxation away from the hospital.
we go back at 8 to check in. i guess the full moon brought every pregnant lady to our new braunfels hospital last night because our reserved room was being used to deliver. no biggie, we only had to wait about an hour until it was open. gave us the chance to make some phone calls. got in the room, got situated. a couple friends stopped by. they gave her her medicine and all that. went to sleep. the doc. came in at 7am and broke her water and then they started the potocin. she came in to the hospital at 2cm. after 4.5 hours on the potocin after the broken water, she was at a 3. that was around 12pm. it was time for the epidural. that was in by 1. within a few hours, she was at 6cm. at one point, myself, my mother, and my mother-in-law looked over at the chart with the baby's heartrate. it had dropped down to 70 and then hovered at 80 or so, and then back up and leveled off....this was during contractions. it did that three times. by that point we all had that worried look/feeling. it seemed we were all waiting for the next contraction to see what it would do. the fourth did the same thing. in one moment, i got up and walked out the door to find the nurse and my mother-in-law pushes the nurse call button. we hadn't told my wife what was going on b/c we knew she would freak. the nurse came in, moved my wife around a couple times to get a better possition and then went to call the doctor. apparently he was playing/laying on/holding the cord cutting off his air. they cut the potocin off and gave her a shot to slow her contractions down so that the baby could get more oxygen. he got situated and back to a good heartrate. about an hour later they kicked the potocin back on. not too much longer and he was doing the same thing. they call the doc. back to the hospital. he comes and checks her. finds out that not only is the baby's air being restricted, but my wife had gone back to a 4cm and her cervex was swollen because he had dropped to a 0, but since her contractions were not strong enough, the dialation wasn't progressing and it his head just sitting there was causing her to swell.
the doc talks to us and to make that part short, the c-section was the best and safest option.
it turns out that the cord was wrapped around his neck twice and then around his arm. during the surgery, they still had to use a vacuum to pull him out. but when he came out, he was as perfect as could be. my wife is doing well after the surgery. she was VERY tired afterwards and a lot of it due to all the dopey medication they had her on for the surgery. i was not able to stay with her at the hospital b/c the room she is in is not a private room (2 beds). while i of course wanted to stay if i could, she was so far out of it mentally and physically, she needed uninterrupted sleep through the night. Bryce had to stay in the nursery for the night to be watched, so i would not have been able to stay with him either. so my parents, my sister, and i came home to my house. i'll be back at the hospital to be with both of them tomorrow. they won't release us until sometime later on saturday.

i'm about to head off to sleep, but i've been waiting for the pictures to upload to photobucket.

mom finally gets to hold him

ET neck

as soon as he left the room, they took him and cleaned him up and did whatever else it was that they needed to do.

Awesome baby. Congrats. All three of my kids were done be c-section, the first being an emergency. Same kind of thing, dropping heart rates now and then.

One good thing about c-sections is that the babies don't come out all mishapen because they didn't need to squeeze their way out.

Congrats again! Glad the little guy is healthy and your wife is doing good! My son had the cord around his neck when he was born too, I still had a regular delivery, but his heartrate was really low when I was in labor, and when he finally made his entrance, his breathing was not good when he came out and was on a ventilator for the 1st day, so I was extremely upset of course, but he's fine now thankfully.

They really do change your life, in all the best ways! My little guy will be 2 next week! Can't believe how fast it's gone by!

Congrats to mom and dad! Hopefully everything is going well and you guys are getting into somewhat of a routine. He's a great looking kid!

My advice:

When friends and relatives come over and offer help with things, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Secondly, buy a kick @$$ coffee maker. Nothing sucks worse than the coffee maker taking a crap at 5 AM.

Congrats again!
