I finally got a free Powerwheels - from Craigslist. (Well, I probably burned three gallons of gas going to get it...)
An old Silverado with a charger and a dead battery. The flame stickers on the hood practically fell off when I was washing it down, but it works fine with a good battery in it.
This thing is huge!
 53.24 KB
The charger works but the battery was toast, as advertised. I put it on the SC-600a overnight, and it still showed no charge. Oh well, pull the connector and scrap it.
First thing I did of course was to cut out the stop so the steering wheel could turn farther. JD spent more time playing with the microphone than driving it!

Congrats on your first! Hopefully there's more to come. Are you gonna go with Silver and Black theme?
Compared to the Escalade, do the Silverado have more leg-room or they about the same? |

Silver & Black? Oh, yeah, the Raiders. Not a big *ball fan. If JD has any say, they'd all be purple! If the polish trick works, I may buff up the black plastic, then put new flames on it... I wish I could get replacement stickers, though.
Legroom in the footwell looks about the same, but the seat is further back. If I took off the seat completely, I could sit "inside" it (with my butt at the back bumper!)

Cool. So with minor mod, bigger kids can fit in this ride no problem. This gives me another option to pursue. Thanks!
On the same boat with replacement stickers. A lot easier just to buy the factory one. Do need a sheet for the Dune Space Beetle but will most likely end up making my own.
Let me know how the buff works... |

Not planning on parting this one. It's probably going to get the 24v scooter controller "someday" - it's big enough to compete with the Gaucho...

JD wanted this one transformed into... well, let's leave it as a surprise and see if anyone can guess as I build it.
For now it will stay 12v, we'll only do cosmetics
Disassembled, and JD stripped off the stickers.

JP, I stand corrected - there is more legroom in here than in a Jeep. But the extra 4" is PAST the gas pedal

First coat of paint in the body (and the back bumper):

First coat on the parts:

Reassembled in time for the demon to play with it (so I'm done for the day):

| You are the second person in as many days posting photos of painting a vehicle with the axels and wheels still attached. That never crossed my mind. I guess its not a bad idea especially for a quick flip you don't want to mess with. |

Or if you're not painting the underbody.
Since this one was black, I thought it looked pretty good. (but there's some overspray in the front wheel well I'll have to deal with...) |

Last shot - the eyes are printed on normal paper and taped in place for now, and the bar in back is about 3" too high for now...

This is an experiment - My target truck has huge metal rims, and low profile tires. So, a quick masking off:

And a shot of Fusion "Nickle Shimmer"

(I put a brick on the throttle to keep the rear wheel spinning while I sprayed)
And the hood:

And the first side:

(It's gonna be fun trying to match this pattern on the other side...)
It should have a scoop, and those spikes should be more twisty flames, but I just don't have the skill to do that.
I'm going to have to cut up that front bumper to make the mouth. Hope I can do a halfway decent job...

Yep. Stripes on top and on the other side, then the roll bar with a speaker in the box up top. I'll pull the sound off the TV (There's two guest appearances of the Crushmeister, both times he has a distinctive 4-note horn, one episode there is no other sound around it!) |

Looks GREAT! Sorry, I've never heard of the show either.
Are you gonna make some side pipes out of conduit too?
I've got another Silverado front bumper if that'll help any with making the mouth...? |

I wanted to - but the truck really needs those side steps - both to get in and to stiffen the sides!
How much for the bumper shipped to 95111? (I don't know that I need it, I'm gonna try to trim it and reuse the part that came out...)

Let me find the best way to package it, and I'll let you know.
Yeah, I thought about side pipes being in the way of the step. I guess you could go under the step, but they would probably need to be pretty short to keep the step usable, which would kinda defeat the whole look. |

It could have been - but then I'd have masked the center, too.
I thought about doing that to Lightning, along with the "Radiator Springs" look - but it's probably my most resellable car right now... |

This weekend, I tried to get the roll bar done.
I had previously bought some 1-1/4" PVC conduit and sweeps (the 90 degree bend) and couplers, but when I mocked it up, it was too thick, and the couplers were too visible.
I remembered reading about a trick to bend PVC pipe using sand. The link posted to this forum was dead, but a quick Google search with the keywords led me to it's new incarnation
I didn't have any caps laying around, but I cut a couple 3' sections of 3/4" PVC pipe, used Gorilla Tape to close off the end, filled them with sand, and taped off the other end

I made up a "jig" out of a scrap plywood, my 5" hole saw, scrap 2x4, and 4 1-5/8" screws. I clamped it to the table, and applied heat.

This was the "worst" bend. See the wrinkles on the inside?

After they cooled, I removed the tape, dumped out the sand, used Goo-Gone to remove the numbers printed on the pipe (this also preps for painting). I had left a few extra inches on each end when bending (as it's always easier to cut the pipe shorter than to stretch it longer) so I trimmed them, glued them to the conduit box, and applied the first coat of Fusion Nickle Shimmer:

JD is convinced that the big "C" on the top is where the horn sounds, so that's where I'll have to install the speaker, eventually. |

Yep, that's a Chicago Electric. It works well enough, which is pretty much the real slogan of Harbor Freight tools, right?
I'd probably kill their sawzall clone in a month of contractor-level work, but for the occasional use, it's been fine. |

Clever! I'll have to remember that technique. That would have come in handy when I was making the EM front bumper. Your "worst" bend looks better than the example given in the link!
I have the same heat gun, but haven't used it yet. On sale for $10 - couldn't pass that up!
I pulled the front bumper today, but still need to package it. Wanna PM me your addy so I can figure shipping? |

You should be getting a box of parts from me tomorrow or Tuesday, so don't think it's a bomb!
But if you want to be extra safe, here's a metal detector app for your Droid...
