Working on a project for someone else this week..

Went to 5 WalMarts to track down a 'new' Mustang that wasn't
the new 2010 version.. Got a nice (dusty) top shelf display
car without the box, manual or charger..

Picked up three 6V 12ah batteries, a Schumaker rapid charger,
some toggles, LEDs and switches and it's starting to come
together now..

Customer wants headlights, tailights, hood stripes, and 18V
so no major body work or paint needed.. I am doing the blackout
rear panel and spoiler though as it looks 'right' on the Mustang.

Batteries are duck tapped together into one cube and placed in
the rear. (installing 4 L brackets to keep it from shifting around)

Up front are three toggles..batteries are wired individually to
each switch so when the switches are facing back to the rear the
car has 18V and drives.. When they are facing front, the charger can
simultaneously take care of all 3 batteries. (in the middle, everything
is disconnected).
Charging lugs will pop up through the white sticker
here to attache the charger to~

Car will have both 6V and 12V taps so the headlights, taillights
and original battery meter will all function at the right voltage.

I hope to get the nose of the car wired up with lights tonight~

Thanks,
Kev

With 18v, I ASS-u-me there will be heatsinks and exhaust fans?

That wiring looks so pretty. I may never show any of my actual wires again, only the schematic!

I think it will be just fine without fans and all that..

I just cordless drill twisted the wiring to keep each batterys
wiring seperate and not confusing for me LOL.. It helps it all
to lay in the wiring channel nicer too.

I'll update after I get the front lights done~

Thanks,
Kev

Well several days without power was a setback but here is an update.

Battery pack is mounted nice and secure. I used a sound deadening
pad for under hardwood floors (the green stuff) to help keep it
quiet and vibration free. The L brackets are in place as well.
Battery pack is solid as a rock, yet you can lift the whole thing
out pretty easily if you ever needed to change out the batteries.

The headlight and taillight switched are mounted in the dash.

The headlights are completed and wired in.

The taillights are completed and wired in as well.

Now I'm mounting the 12V and 6V taps and getting the wiring attached.

Thanks,
Kev

The rear lights are "Flex LED" lights..
They are 12V ready and they come in two long flexible strips
with 18 LEDs each. Adhesive backed too..

The cool thing about them is that you can cut them after each
third LED and they have solder points too.. So you can use a
little strip here and there too.. They are pretty useful IMHO.

They sell them at AutoZone for $19.99
Not too bad for 36 LEDs that are super easy to install and
configure how you want. They dont work for round headlights
but they are great for tails, underbody lighting, interior glow,
and maybe square headlight applications like Escalades & Silverados?

Thanks,
Kev

I noticed on the headlights that you had different resistors than the tiny ones that that came with; what resistors did you use? I have the same ones and I'm about ready to wire them. I don't know much about wiring.(I'm more of a fab and paint guy!)Thanks in advance.

Someone on the batteries/wiring forum told me to put a 1 watt 10 ohm resistor on each lights wiring so I could power the 4.5 volt LED from a 6 volt power tap. Now that the car is done, I can attest to the fact that it works perfectly.

Here are a few pictures and a video of the finished product..

Everything works perfectly.. the charging method inparticular is great. Leaves the batteries in the car, charges all three 6 volt batteries at once overnight and then with a flick of the toggles, runs the car at 18 volts. Reverse and slow speed work at half the full speed.. it's all good

(this video is for the guy I made the car for so he can see how to charge etc.. since it is for someone else I'm not going to send the kids out to do donuts for the camera)

Thanks,
Kev

Do you by chance have a wiring diagram for this? I have the mustang on the way along with some batteries and motors and this is by far the best setup I have seen

Took the family out for dinner tonight and hit a WalMart out in that area.

One brand new hot pink Mustang GT sitting in my garage right now.
Store display from up on the racks.. never on the ground, looks 100% mint.
Pictures tomorrow when it's light out

(Paint is my friend, but I won't need my friends help on this one)

Here's the display model I scored yesterday~

I've ordered the batteries, the charger and all the LED lighting..
Just need to pick up some silver vinyl for the stripes.

Using 12V Oznium lighting front and rear this time for ease of installation.

White LEDs in the headlights and yellow in the driving lights..
I hope to start taking stuff apart tomorrow~

I used scrap vinyl I got for free from a sign shop..
I cut it in to 4 inch wide strips with a straight edge and razor knife.

It came without a backing so it took patience to apply but it came out nice.

The pink GT will get silver stripes and all Barbie markings will be removed.

Also, got my Oznium order.. great stuff!
This will be even easier and a cleaner looking install for the lighting~

Kev

Did you ever get the part number for these switches? Is it the 20A 12vdc dpdt toggle switches? Its the highest rated switch I could find at radio shack. Is there any concern about the rating being lower the 18v going through these? Aren't the powerwheels switches rated to 30a. Just wondering what your using and if there is any conern on the rating of the switches.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062531

Also are you just using a bolt/nut for the charging lugs? kinda looks like it.

Yes, those are the exact switches I'm using..

Admittedly, I am not an electrical engineer by any stretch..
I can only say from experience that these are working great
with no failure or hotness.
You might want to send a PM to 12vwiz and see what he thinks as
he seems very knowledgable on electrical issues here on the forum.

My charging posts are just nuts and bolts with the wiring attached
on the underside with ring terminal and lock washers.
On the next car I am going to seperate them more as a 'just in case'
insurance policy against kids laying a real screwdriver across them.

.

Thanks,
Kev

First, I love your mustang mod...it got me hooked. I'm following the wiring diagram and am having troubles...I'm using a 20A 12v toggle Center Dead. I get readings on my meter for the charging jacks when I have the switches selected for it...but I get no power when pressing the pedal to activate the motors...also, it is blowing a 30 amp fuse for just 1 batt...wierd.

did you run into anything with switches? I've tested each selector and get readings in all positions except for the motor power...

Thanks~ (check version 2.0 as well.. I like it better)

I've had no issues with the toggles.. are you using the exact ones I used from Radio Shack?

I followed this diagram exactly and it works perfectly to charge with the toggles in one direction and run 18V in the other direction.

I used 20amp fuses initially and 1 did blow.. since switching to 30 amp fuses, there have been no issues.

Make sure you have everything going in to the toggles well protected from each other too.. maybe 2 wires touching intermittently?
(I'd specifically look closely at the toggle associated with the one battery that is blowing the fuses)

lmk how it turns out.. feel free to PM with questions as well~
Good luck

Thanks,
Kev

was just thinking about the switches for the charging system. would it really matter if you didnt have the center position? Instead an On-Off-On you used a On-On.
the up position is run, the lower is charge. any problems with that?

That is fine as long as it has 6 poles and switches which set of poles the center 2 are connected to. It has actually been recommended in another thread to use stock Powerwheels switches if you have them becuase they are rated to 30 amps. Those are exactly what you are asking on-on with only 2 positions.

You mean the little shifter switches?
Those are 30 amp?

I'm just about to tear my red 12V Mustang apart to upgrade to 18V and those rockers would be ideal..
(not sure why I never thought of that before LOL)

Thanks,
Kev

Yea the shifter switches

Thats what I have read around here. Not sure how to verify it. If you have some laying around I would give it a shot. If you don't have any they may be a bit more expensive then what you are using but If they are 30amp they would be better suited for this application. I thought I read somewhere somebody found where to purchase the switch at napa or something but I don't recall where I read it or what the actual specs of that switch was.

Where did you get them and how much did you pay for them? This is good information if others want to do this also.
