This thread contains the Mustang builds..
There is another thread with video walk arounds of the completed cars located here: http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14760
___________________________________________________
Here's the Mustang I found for $35 on Craigslist..

It obviously sat outside as it is quite faded and spider web infested
The good thing though is that the tires have zero wear, the shifter still had the hi-speed lockout screw in place and the seat was all the way forward so it was most likely driven by a little kid in slow speed only.
My youngest, Cooper, wants a red Mustang for Christmas very badly but there was no way we could afford to buy him a new one.. Finding this one came at the perfect time.
My plan is to completely take it apart and clean and repaint the whole car. It will stay bright red and the interior will get freshened up too. I'm also going to add lighting front and rear.
It's going to take some TLC to get it ready for Christmas morning, but I'm looking forward to working on it.. it will be SO worth the smile it brings

Thanks, Kev

"stealth mode" ... yep.. this one is getting done in the basement.
It's taken apart now for the most part.. windshield and dash are out, trunk, hood, front clip etc.. just the wheels and motors left to remove.
I picked up some supplies today..

Flame red plastic paint, tan interior paint, pinstripe, & LED lighting.
I grabbed four of the cheap LED flashlights that have 9 LEDs in a circle.. I think they are going to work perfectly for the headlights and driving lights..
The LED strips are great.. prewired to work on 12V, and you can cut off three at a time and run jumper wires to each little section or leave them in a long strip.. there are 36 LEDs in total and they are pretty bright

These strips are going to be perfect for the Mustang tail lights / brake lights~

Actually, no..

My wife has been patiently waiting for me to build her a new work space in her craft room so I took care of that over the last few nights. It came out nice and she's thrilled so I'll be getting back to the Mustang tonight.
I did order a few things from Hobbymasters though.. A brand new radio/soundbox, battery meter, chrome stickers, and Barbie stickers for the Mustang. The Barbie sheet at least has new vents, knobs, parking lights, 3rd brake light and lower grill stickers.. I'll make my own gauge stickers for the dash.
I was going to buy hubcaps but at $8 dollars each it was just a little too much..I'll paint the ones I have instead.
I was trying to stay on a $100 budget for this car and I'm already over a bit.
$35.00 - Car $34.95 - Lighting $18.00 - Paint $09.00 - Stickers $13.50 - Radio/soundbox $05.40 - Battery meter ------- $115.85 - Total for the project
Tonight I'm going to take apart the rest of the car and get everything prepped for paint~

Put one 12V Oznium Superflux in each light up front and she'll be plenty bright!! The stock buckets do a fairly decent job of reflecting the light back out. Just drill a small hole in the center of each and wire in parallel.

Right on~
I was very happy when I found the Rustoleum plastic paint at AutoZone.. Same price as Fusion at WalMart.
Took a little longer to dry, but at least is is very RED
It's going to look great assembled.. the color has a bit more gloss than the Fusion as well~
EDIT: The long LED strips came from Autozone as well.. they are 12V ready. ..and, you can cut them in to little segments and solder jumpers.. They are going to be my brake and tail lights~

| Those gauges look sweet!! The chrome wheels kind of suck... a lot of chrome has come off of mine... the blue mustangs have the better hubcaps, they are grey... dont know why there is a difference. |

I dont think you can buy the kit... you can buy a cervinis mustang with the body kit though, for 500 bucks... cervinis.com
Its pretty cool has side pipes, sweet spoiler... "Lil C-500"
Looking good, makes me want to repaint my sons now, just dont feel like doing all the bondo and sanding to get the plastic even.

The restoration of the red Mustang is nearly complete.. Everything is back together, I'm just waiting on an LED setup I ordered for the front lights. Got my new radio and battery meter from Hobbymasters installed too. The car is looking FAR better than it did 2 weeks ago!

Now for the part I wasn't really planning on.. Another Mustang came up (somewhat) locally and I had to get it.
Now both boys will have a Mustang parked next to the tree Christmas morning.. only problem is that my oldest really doesn't like red so I need to do a complete repaint on this second one even though it is in brand new condition.. I should have time to get this one done for Christmas moring as well..
Here it is next to the nearly completed one~

It was soooo nice to take apart this one as it was seriously like new.. Zero grunge. It only took about 20 minutes to get it apart and ready for paint prep~

look how clean the underside / motors are..

It's going to be a busy week |
Thanks, Kev

I set up my paint area in the basement last night and got the car primed..
Check out this paint booth.. especially the redneck ventilation system

(yes that's one fan pointing air at another fan -and there' an open window behind me too)
It actually works pretty well.. Priming last night and painting quite a bit today and there have been no fumes in the living room above this area.. My wife said she can't smell a thing upstairs.
I read on the Fusion paint can a warning about applying second coats.. It says 30 minute dry time, then apply second coats BEFORE 24 hours or AFTER 7 days. I know there have been some discussions about wrinkled paint etc and this time line seems like what needs to be adhered to in order for the paint to stick and dry without issues.
Of course that meant that I HAD to get color on my primed parts today insteaf of Saturday like I planned~
Here are a few shots from last night and this morning~

The blue isn't showing very well in pictures, but it's really cool in person..
My LEDs came today so I'm going to work on the taillights for the blue one and get going on some front lights too..
|
Thanks, Kev

Nice "paint booth" (Better than what I have, anyway)
Pity you didn't get this one earlier, you could have painted the faded one and not this one - but the "new" red is redder! |

Last update before the 'completed' post.. hopefully Wednesday night~
Blue car is 99% done.. no lights, but a complete repaint with several home made stickers. I've got a 2010 power bulge hood on the way but it took longer to get than I thought so I painted the stock hood just to be on the safe side.. I can add the 2010 hood later.

..and the red car is 95% done.. I got the LED lights in place in the headlight reflectors.. Tomorrow I just need to connect all the wires that are already run under the hood.

Tonight I'm driving to Sayville NY to pick up our Grandmother and I'm driving her back tomorrow morning.. Leaves me just Wednesday night to finish it up since we celebrate Christmas with family on Christmas eve.. It's going to be a busy night Wednesday LOL~

Here's a longshot idea - reduce the front panel to the smallest part you can, mail it to someone, have them mount the lights, leaving two wires. One to the switch, one to the Neg of a battery.

With the exception of 1 or 2 tiny details (like a front plate for the red one) they are DONE
Coopers (red)

Carters (blue)
Got the power bulge hood today so I primed it..

Then I taped off the bulge and painted it..

And put it on the car..

No lights on Carters.. just not enough time and I've already promised him we'd do up his police Gaucho over the winter with lights and all that.. One of his Christmas gifts will be a box full of LED strips and a strobe controller~
I'll add a couple more pictures once they are parked together by the tree.. I should have a couple of pretty excited boys on Friday |
Thanks, Kev
