this is my first post, i'll get that out of the way first. new to the PW scene, but not the wiring\mechanic etc....so that being said...
my daughter is getting to the age of liking to ride the neighbors powerwheels. so i got her one for christmas....its killing me not to be able to give it to her yet.( but thats besides the point)
anyway, i have read most of the FAQs and most of my questions have been pretty much answered.
my main goal is to convert it to 24 volt. but i have to give her a couple of months to learn to drive it better first.
anyway, i have read a few post about the motors not lasting long after the conversion, then others have said that theirs have lasted a long time.
what is the average time frame that the motors will last after 24v conversion?
is it worth it for me to change it on a brand new pw that i paid 299 for, or should i just buy one off of craigslist for 30 bucks and convert it instead of the new one?
what are your thoughts?????

| first off welcome! now my opinion, no go find a cheap one off craigslist and experiment with that...you paid 300 for that one, dont necessarily "leave it alone" you can do alot with that one...paint, lighting, audio, etc. , she will love that one! I GUARANTEE this is not your last power wheels. save the conversion for a cheap one until you know how it does first hand. Dont be like me, let the kid enjoy it before you break it. :) (again thats my opinion!) |

when i got the mustang i had fully planned on making it 24v but now after reading alot of these post i don't know if i want to do that right away,
how long do the batteries usually last....ride time, battery life...etc? motors? |

depends on the battery. this is what i have had happen....
(power wheels batteries) more voltage = less ride time i believe you need to get a battery with a higher AH rating (aftermarket battery)
ive juiced up power wheels super 6 motors with 12v...those held up fine 12v to 18v held up fine.
you may want to add heat sinks, fuses, and a fan if you go any higher then that...
(please someone correct me if im wrong) |

Welcome to the site, and addiction. Pretty soon you will be pawning your TV to buy Power Wheels, or parts.
The mustang is one of the fastest stock PW. Good job! On 18v, it goes pretty fast, and does doughnuts easily. I would stick to 18v max, and also you might try upgrading to the Titan motors. They are rated at 14.4v and are quite a bit faster than stock (from what I have heard) On 18v it should really fly. You can get them at hobbymaster.com, towerhobbies.com and also if you have a Hobby Town USA local, you should be able to get them from there.
It is usually recommended to use heatsinks but on 18v I havent had a problem with any of my sons rides getting hot. Just keep an eye on them and if they do start to get pretty hot, add heatsinks.
That would be a good start to making the mustang fast. Also motor swaps wont take long at all and you can have it back on the road quickly.
When you do upgrade to 18v, if you use aftermarket batteries, be sure to add the fuse. Im not sure if you need one if you will be using the stock 12v + aftermarket 6v... someone else will know though. |

Welcome to the site!
As discussed already, 18V is usually a good voltage to stick to. The mustangs have 21T gearboxes, which are the fastest Power Wheels gearboxes, and on 18V I'm sure you're daughter will be more than happy with the speed. It's much more reliable than 24V, especially if she'll be riding on grass at all.
When you do add another battery, you'll have to consider things such as where to put it, how much cutting you're willing do to, what type of batteries to use. From what I've read on the mustangs, there really isn't any place to put an additional battery without cutting a place for it.
If you keep the stock 12V battery, and go with an aftermarket 6V battery, you'll need to get either a 10AH or 12AH battery to keep it close to the stock 9.5AH. The stock battery has a breaker in it, so you won't need to add a fuse or breaker if you keep it, but on 18V, you may find it trips the breaker a lot when riding on grass or uphill. If most of the driving will be on flat pavement, it probably won't trip much, if at all.
If you are dead set on 24V, then there are things you can do to help keep the motors and gearboxes from breaking down. Heatsinks and cooling fans are practically a must to keep the motors cool. To help reduce the strain on the gearboxes, you can add a seperate brake pedal, so the motors don't automatically lock when the gas pedal is let up. If that doesn't seem like something you want to do, you could put a higher value resistor in, or remove the auto brake wire so the car would roll to a stop rather that stopping abruptly, which is where most of the strain occurs. |

thats one thing that i was wondering...there isn't much room to put even another 6v battery...im sure i could do some cutting
i was wondering, if anyone in her had done some cutting on the mustangs and if so could i see some pics of it....what worked best, etc... |

only one 12v will fit there...i could probably put 2 but the hood wouldn't close.....I do have a hood...;)
You can Fit a 12 volt and a 6Volt under there easy. The Hood Will Shut.If you want.I can measure mine to tell you where to cut and how to do it.I use a Razor knife and a Blow Torch.I heat the Plastic up and then slice it like butter.Gives you a smooth cut. This way your kids dont get cut if they mess around under the hood!!! |

| I put my 12v/12AH on its side in the stock hole. You could probably put one under the seat also. I believe there is some room under there. The hood has a lot of room under it actually. You would be suprised what could fit under there, especially if you got one of those thin batteries from Gruber. |

hood/bodystyle of newer one is nicer, your current one has nicer wheels..see if you can't just get the cowl to add to your existing one and call it a day |

| I like the old one better, but the Cowl hood is better. I second what TurboKev said and just buy a new hood from Hobbymasters. |

I never noticed before that the 2010 body style is a v-6... that stinks. I wonder if the 05 grill would fit... Ive always wanted to try and put the front end of the 2010 on the 05 (real mustangs too). You could always buy the Cervinis mustang for 500 bucks... lol. It looks awesome, has a better spoiler, side pipes, and some other different body mods.
I got lucky though, my sons mustang is red, so if I order a hood I can just throw it on and call it good. Well, after I get some Roushcharged decals made for it. |
