I started this project after seeing scoutmans metal frame that he is building and decided that would be a cool jeep for my boy.I picked this jeep up for $10 off cl.

Insert Image: I plan on 4wd,24v controller, a simple 3-link suspension,a few leds, and a paint job.But for now here are a few pics of what I have done so far.

I borrowed these from a peg polaris,a little too stiff but look cool under there

Thanks,I used 3/4" square tubing with a 7/16" flat washer welded to each end, then slid the stock axle through the inside of the tubing.

Been working on the front axle setup and this is what I have come up with.

48.98 KB I used a door closer spring cut in half to put above the spindles to help soften the ride a little since the polaris springs are a little stiff.

55.22 KB

48.56 KB I found this tie rod and ends at bmikarts.com for cheap so I ordered it.I wasnt thinking when I ordered it and got one to long so now have to cut it and shorten it 3 inches or so

So true...I've been searching the Craislist adds for a cheap used one for a while now. I just want a semi-decent 110V one so I don't have to run a 220V outlet to my garage.

Yeah 110v is all you really need for around the house projects.I have had a Miller 140 that quit after 5 years of heavy welding and now have a Hobart 140 that is basiclly the same machine just in different colors and cheaper price(miller owns hobart). Also if you can find one that has the sheilding gas(argon) attachment get it,that produces a much cleaner weld.

I am in the same boat gseric. I want to learn. I will not buy a 220V one because I dont want to pay or run a 220V line.

Thanks alot, this one isn't really going to flex to much but atleast it will be different than the other ones my boy has.And I got to tell you very nice fabrication skills on your build...I'm used to welding up demolition derby cars so the fab work didnt have to look to pretty there, just functional

Well got a little more done last night in the garage(dont seem to get out there as much any more).I have the front axle in and one side of the stabilizer bar tacked into place.Heres a couple pics of whats done.

68.39 KB

58.6 KB And here it is with the body mocked up on it.

58.47 KB Tell me what you think is it too tall for the tires and stability? It doesn't look to bad setting on the table but I havent had it on the ground yet.My son is kinda hefty for the age of three so that might play a roll in high center of gravity. So if anything I can strecth out the track width on the axles now and also switch to a set of Bigfoot tires.

I would lower it down a bit if it were mine. A super tall jeep like that is just asking to dump the kid out. Look at outboarding the lower mounting points of the coil springs. That should make it a bit more stable too.

I would leave it that high and just widen the stanse. Just extend the axels out 3 or 4 inches on all sides, then put the BIGGEST wheels you can find on her. It's cool when your ridin high and lookin down on everyone. MIKE

I run into the same problem. I typically do most of my cutting and welding after my son goes to bed. Of course that only leaves me with an hour or 2 of good working time. Keep it up.

Well for a couple reasons:one being that the peg polaris shocks are kinda stiff so I put these on the spindle to soften the ride a little. And second,I just wanted to try it.I have seen this done on factory go-carts before and thought what the heck. Now if it works I'll be supprised,I'm thinking that there will be to much side force on the spindle bolt for it to actually slide and compress the spring above it.But I've gotta try right

Well I managed to get some garage time in the last couple nights and got a little farther on this beast.I cut the front axle in half and widened it 4 inches to give it a little more stability. This also out boarded the bottom of the shocks, that will help with stability too.I also got the front panhard bar fabbed up and installed,so Im getting closer to have the frame done atleastNext on the list to do is finish connecting the steering(still in design mode)and widen the rear axle and build rear bumber..........and maybe a battery tray underneath................and then...........I dont think this project will ever get done if I dont stop dreaming new things up,lmao!Anyway here are a few pics of the progress so far.

Wow, that is going to be one sweet jeep when its done. Might need some larger wheels though. Besides that it looks good. I wish I had the skills to weld so I could make a lifted metal frame jeep.

I think that those Polaris springs will seem softer when you get the driver and battery weight on them. Looking good, so much more realistic.

When I was building race cars, we could hardly get the springs in them......when they were done, you had to put 14 turns on the jack screws to get the ride hieght back up where it belonged.

Hey thanks,I agree with you on the shocks/springs.They will compress by pushing really hard by hand,so after its all together I hope they move a litte................I started building a roundy-round car, still sitting in the barn unfinished

76 Buick Century. NJ state law requires the windshield to be left in. The state police control all motor sports in NJ. It was a blast for sure.....and probably one of the reasons my body doesn't work like it used to.

I qualified for the feature all 3 years. The first year the neutral saftey switch got me(don't know why I didn't remove it)(AMC Ambassader ). In 98 I blew up a planetary set in the trans(78 Caprice).

Nice job. Maybe you could cut the front one off(plastic) at the grille and go all steel up there too. I forget how weak the stock ones are and try picking mine up by the stock bumper all the time.!

Drive it like you stole it!........out of somebody's garbage!

so i need advice from a pro (obliviously your a pro hotrodtodd!) my spindles are too small to get the front motors/g.b's on, can i cut the plastic drivers in half to get that xtra 1 1/4" i need? how will that work out? that's the only thing stopping me from giving this to my kids for Christmas....

My wife said stop at 10... well 35 and counting.

If you can afford it, get a set of Mustang drivers - they're half the thickness, but should match up on both sides
(I can't remember who did this)

Escalade (Rubber tires, LED lights, Key switch, Remote Kill, wings. Wings?)
Lil Wrangler (2WD, 12v, Lights), Dora Jeep (Super-6 @ 12v, lights), Jeep Enforcer turned Aftershock (18v, WIP),
Grape Gaucho A151 (24v, scooter controller, WIP)
KFX Quad (Remote Kill), Crushmeister! (Silverado), Limited Edition Jeep (Stock)
Kawasaki Mojave 250 (Stock), PP Gator (Lights), Home Depot Loader, Lightning McQueen (Stock)

Love the rear bumper. All it needs now is some dimpled sheetmetal to skin it.

I have bumpers on my agenda but have other hurdles at the moment, like why it won't go in high gear.

Project metal framed Jeep with suspension, axles, etc.

LOL,I appreciate the pro title but I am far from from a pro with anything.More of a "jack of all trades"if you will. Anyway you may be able to cut your drivers to size,Im not sure what type you have, but I would try to cut them with a hack saw or even a bandsaw.Just make sure they are straight after the cuts.Divinar brings up a good point too, look into that also if you can afford it.
