The steering rod problem with the new Jeep Hurricane has been previously discussed here. The steering rod is seemingly too long, and inserts into the steering linkage bracket too far to allow the jeep to turn. Not having the tools that Chris Bennett had to cut the rod and drill a new hole through it, I used a metal plumbing clamp to temporarily remedy the issue (pictures to follow).
In addition to my temporary solution, I called FP. They of course claimed to have no idea what the problem may be, and said they would send me out a new steering rod. I figured the steering rod would be the same as the old one when it arrived, but to my surprise, it was not. It was not a different length at all, but the "S" curve at the end of it was set back more towards the middle of the rod, leaving more of a straight section after the S curve, near the end. This corrected the issue completely.
Here are a few pictures of the old and the new rod:
Here the original rod is on top. You can see the piece at the end after the "S" curve in the new rod (lower) is much longer:

Old rod on top, new rod on the bottom:

Here is a picture of the old rod inserted into the steering linkage. You can see the S part of the rod is sitting in the bracket, not the straight piece after the S curve. This makes the vehicle unable to turn:

Here is my temporary solution. I bought a metal plumbing clamp and attached it just above the last bend in the S curve. This prevented the steering rod from settling too far down into the steering linkage bracket:

This worked like a charm and enabled me to actually still give the jeep to my daughter for Christmas in an operable state. The only issue was that it caused the steering rod to protrude too far out at the other end and it stuck out of the steering wheel, and looked like this (the steering wheel cap would not go on the steering wheel):
41.59 KB
Long story short, today the new steering column arrived from FP, and it solved the problem. Here is a picture of the steering linkage with the new column installed and the steering pin and cap inserted at the steering wheel like it should be (you can see the S curve is set back and not set into the steering linkage bracket):

no they dont, they have "mock" suspension looking undercarrage axle mounting, but it is totally inoperable....
I might be crazy, but my ideas are the only thing I own ! |

I believe FP has fixed this problem with their newer production models. I bought a Hurricane on the Monday (08/11/08) and it seems they adjusted the length between the bottom pin hole and S bend on the most recent production Jeeps. This is bacically to let those who plan on buying one in the furute, know that this is fixed.

Thanks for the great head up on the issue guys, but I was wondering if the new replacement rod in one the pictures EvilJack posted seem to be too long? I too just bought my son a hurricane, and would like to know if I should try to shorten the lenght of this steering rod down to where the plastic nut would touches the metal bracket. Thanks for your time in advance.

This doesn't have anything to do with the stearing but like Bonner said this thing is a beast. My son took his mudding a few days ago. I don't know why I was dumb enough to let him take the super shock in, but he had to pull it out with the Hurricane. Think we should name it "IKE". I've been living in Florida for the past 25 years. Before that I lived in Sugarland, Tx.. I forgot about Texas mud. That stuff don't come off!!!!I decided to leave it on the wheels Maybe they'll last longer on the pavement.

How do I remove the steering rod to do this mod? I removed the cap in the steering wheel, removed the screw at the bottom, took the rod out of the bottom piece, but it does not seem to have the clearance to pull out. The piece that the rod goes into is riveted to the Jeep. Whats the trick?

Instead why not just cut the rod in the middle and shorten the rod so both ends are correct and then weld it back together.
