I figured I'd start a project page on our Gaucho and as time goes on and I do more to it,
I can bring the thread back from the dead and keep it all in one place.

The start:

A craigslist add for a Gaucho electric Jeep pops up on the RSS reader.. $50 but it says it doesn't run.
Thanks to the RSS I am first to respond and I pick it up for $50 cash just 2 towns away.

It's in very good condition overall and comes with 2 Peg batteries, the charger and the owners manuals.
The Jeep is from 1998 and the sellers are the original owners.

Good Stuff:
- Has very nice tires that I won't need to replace
- Always garage stored so it's not nasty dirty
- Has 'most' of the parts typically missing

Not so good stuff:
- Doesn't run when 12V applied to battery connector (pedal feels 'crunchy')
- Missing a few small things.. foglight, hammer, taillight and key.

Here's a few shots of how it looked the day I brought it home:

A member here was kind enough to pick up several things for me at the Peg store in Indiana..
New foglight, A set of taillights, an ignition key, some spare ignition wires for the pretend engine, and a pedal switch..
This supply of parts set me back $16 dollars so now I'm in to the Jeep for $66 dollars.

UPDATE 9/1: Sold 2 connectors and the charger for $14.50 after shipping so bottom line is at $51.50 now.
UPDATE 9/10 Bought 3 cans of Fusion paint for $13.92 so botton line is at $65.42 now.

Once the parts arrived and I took the pedal assembly out I discovered the switch was not like
all the other normal pedal switches you see..

It looked like this:

Rather than play around with the Peg wiring I decided to splice in a complete PW wiring harness
and shifter that came from a free Wrangler and I knew was working well.
I did replace the shift handle itself and used an Extreme Machine part instead of the flimsy T shifter on the PW Jeep.

I had to cut some plastic for the shifter to mount and trim the rear sub assembly to fit but it went together very easily.
I also had to trim the pedal mount to fit the newer 3 prong switch.
Once everything was in place, I plugged in a PW 12V battery and the Jeep sprang to life.. all 3 speeds working perfectly.

I put everything back together this morning and the kids got their first test drive..
Needless to say they are pretty happy.

I need to cut a little trim up to surround the shifter with so that looks better..
and add the red leather to the shift handle (Carter really wants that back on)

As time permits I'm going to do up a light wiring harness to get all the lights on the Jeep working,
add a 6V battery to bump up to 18V and over the winter I may even do a complete tear down and repaint..
But for now the kids are not going to relinquish it to the workbench for some time I imagine

Random thoughts on the Gaucho:

These Jeeps are WAY WAY better than the Powerwheels Jeeps.. even the nice lifted models like the Rescue Jeep we have.
The extra goodies like the fake engine, the rear suspension and the more realistic overall appearance are all pluses..
but also the steering is a much better design, the ground clearance is fantastic, and the overall build quality is superior.
I have every intention of finding another one so both boys can have their own Gaucho..
I'll keep some PW products around like the Extreme Machines, but as soon as I can find another Gaucho,
I'll be doing a "Rescue Jeep" version for Cooper using the PW version we have now for all the parts.

Will update from time to time with changes or additions~

Thanks,
Kev

Small update:

Painted the exhaust pipes silver since the chrome was all chipped and painted the covers satin black.. Looks much better.

Also got rid of the rediculous red trim around the roll bar lighting with the satin black paint as well.

"Gaucho Enforcer"

Since getting a really nice Enforcer for free off Craigslist last week, I decided to build Carter a Gaucho incorporating the lights/siren and microphone.

His favorite color is blue so I'm going with a blue and white police theme for him.

So far I've stripped the Gaucho down and painted the interior floor black, I've added the red leather boot to the Extreme Machine shifter I put in, and I got the hood painted and drilled for the lightbar.

Thanks,
Kev

For the life of me or more like fear of breaking it, what's the trick in removing the front turn signal light? I'm pretty sure there's a screw under that to attach the body to the floor pan.

Yes there is a screw that holds the grey base to the yellow body.. and behind the screw is the cavity where the clip that holds the running light is..

I don't think it's possible to stick a small diameter pick or something up in there to release the light by only taking out the screw due to the bottom of the light housing being in the way, but removing the body reveals a larger opening to easily unclip the light.

Thanks,
Kev

Satin black in the engine bay and more blue on the cowl:

Then I masked that and shot the rest of the body gloss white:

Lots to go but at least it feels like it's well underway~

I'm so intrigued. We just got one of these gauchos for 40 bucks, but it's pretty sun faded and needs a new reverse switch and maybe a shifter. still goes forward and the kids are having a blast. But I'm itching to paint one up!

never mind I see differences now... under radio dash buttons...not sure what they do, and the grill. And I did not see a resistor or relay going to brake.

For you? How about nadda?

I'll send you a couple different sizes of them along with the Gaucho stickers I've already saved for you.

I was able to save the original dash gauges as well..

The ones in the police Jeep are actually a tiny bit small.. since they are printed with chrome bezels and then they get put in to the black plastic bezels,
I think they'll look better a little larger and trimmed to fit directly in the plastic..
When I do my other Gaucho up as a Fire Rescue Jeep I'm going to use the adjusted ones~

Thanks,
Kev

The Big Reveal:

Spent a couple hours this morning getting the Jeep back together and running again..
Kids think it's great as is but I still want to add working lights and flashers etc..
Maybe over the winter while it won't be getting use anyways~

With the original purchase price, paint, Enforcer parts etc I'm
in to this Police Jeep for less than $70 dollars.. gotta love that~

Uploading a couple vids now~

Now the Mustangs are another story, they don't have big bumpers and tires
to protect the painted surfaces LOL.. they are showing some wear and tear
