What started out as a little 'GoKart' project inspired by this thread:
http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10567
...has turned in to a little more. Son #1 finds out I'm making a GoKart for son #2 and he 'needs' to do something special to his as well..
So this thread will follow along with 2 Extreme Machines being torn down and rebuilt, each a little differently.
Coopers will get the Go Kart treatment and will remain stock otherwise.. Fresh paint, no cage, wing added to the rear.
Carters will also get fresh paint, badly needed replacement tires, and a 19T gearset. I'm considering adding a 'turbo' button to give him 18V at the press of a wheel mounted button.. I've got a few extra 6V batteries so I might as well put one to use~
Here's the basic idea for the GoKart using my 'parts car' chassis.. only difference to Carolinapeds machine is the addition of a small wing to the rear of the motor cover.. Certainly not very functional but Cooper likes the way it looks~

And here they are ready to be torn down~

After taking that picture, I got Coopers completely torn down and scrubbed all the plastics. Painted the hubcaps and steering wheel and got the main body ready for paint..will do that tomorrow.
More pictures after more progress~

Thanks, Kev

Hey, just FYI. I found some rubber air tires that work great on these unit.. The stock tire has 2 bearing things that go between the shaft and the wheel and that bearing fits and works perfectly on this tire. It is the same height but 1" thinner. And they are only $10 and weigh 3lbs I plan on making a post about it when I get the pictures edited. Took 5 minutes to install and make it ride and turn 1000 times better.
All you need is 2 washers and new cap lock things and they are installed. Best and easiest mod I have ever done!!

that tire is only 3" and a little skinny but same 10" and light..
this one is 4" wide but weighs 1LB more and I do not think it will fit on the axle, I think it is too wide but still only $10

I like the rubber tire look but for the speed and terrain my kids are driving, the stock wheels are fine.. plus I really love the hubcaps on the Extreme machine LOL..
Well.. not 100% done yet, but certainly done enough to let Cooper take it for a spin.
I got it back together tonight and everything seems to work fine. Cooper loves it.. Carter has now decided that he needs "a Formula 1 car" also and has abandoned his desire for a police type car. Looks like I'll be building a clone to this only in blue and white next~
Here's a few pictures taken an hour ago:

To finish things off I'm going to print a few stickers.. new gauges, horn button and headlights.. I might wait till Carters is done so I can print everything at once.
On to the next one~!

Maybe some styrene plastic sheet cut to size and afixed from the back with hot glue or silicone? I know they sell 8.5 by 11 sheets at the local hobby store here.. The kids don't seem to even notice things like that so I let it go
I went to Staples and got some sticker paper to print on.. ran this off and dressed them up a bit with the gauges.. I did another sheet later today that I didn't take a picture of with a Power Wheels logo, a flux capacitor Danger sign, and some new "12 VOLT" tags for th eengine cover..
Kids thought this stuff was great.. Carter said he was going 68MPH every time he drove by the deck LOL~

So, this wraps up the Extreme Machine projects for now.. Neither kid is really fully ready for 18 Volts yet so for the rest of this summer we'll enjoy them as is.. They drive them non stop so they must like the end result
On the the next task~

"Is there a website you went to, to get the designs/emblems? They look like if you just bought a sheet of stickers from Hobbymasters."
I just clicked around different search tags on Google for images.. Found a great site for the gauges.. saved a couple dozen of them. Then I did 'insert picture' in to a Word document and double click the image.. you can then adjust the size from there to get an exact fit. You can format the page for landscape or portrait to make what you want fit. This is the first time I tried anything like this and it really was a breeze..
The only downside is that they are not glossy.. I used the highest print quality on our Cannon MX700 and they came out nice, but not OEM nice~

Those are great. I love the spoiler.
As for gears...you could go to 21 Ts. W/12 v batteries it'll be quick. Some folks might have some imput about torque. I haven't experienced any issues, but my drivers are less than 40 lbs.
w/18v it screams....but you'll need to add bmx tire treads to the front wheels as there will be no steering w/just plastic wheels.

i'll post a vid of ella in hers at 12v and 18v.
i also added the Traxxas Titan 14.4v Monster 550's...which are very nice, but shorter pinon gear. |

As usually happens, plans change as you go along.. This one will not have the F1 wing, I detailed up the engine a bit to make it stand out more and I completely removed any front spoiler.
Carter likes the simple look and the boys are having a blast racing each other in their "Go Karts"
Pictures below~

Hey Kev, great work!
I'm curious how you braced the steering rod on the blue machine with the front bumper removed. I'm wanna build a new bumper out of PVC for mine, and I want to make sure I'm bracing it well enough to hold up.
Thanks. |

That black part is actually the original front bumper assembly, just sawed off short.. I painted it black after hacking it up and it holds everything together just like stock but you can't notice it at all in there~
I'll try to grab a picture of the underside today.. That Kart is still kicking around upstairs in the garage I think~
Ahhh. OK, thanks!
I'm trying to preserve the front bumper in case my design doesn't look any better . I have this rigged up so far, but I'll have to field test it to see if it will hold up...

Thanks for the info Kev. |
