Scored this one off of Craigslist.
At $50 it's more expensive than I'd like, but it was complete, with charger & battery. And it's the same gray battery JD knows how to plug in, and swap out.

It moved on grass with ME sitting on it for a few feet!

Now maybe JD will leave Mikey's Dora Quad alone, if he has his own?

This one is going to stay stock for a bit while I finish the Little Red Jeep and the Enforcer.

Planned upgrades include superflux headlights, taillights, and some kind of green led under the fender for that "floating" look.

Any other suggestions?

Notes.

Steering is pretty bad. You really want to tighten it up as much as possible. I replaced the original cross brace with a new aluminum bar that pulled the spindles in some. I also suggest rubber on the front tires.

If moving to 18v, you have to make sure that you are not sending 18v to the high/low circuit board or you will blow out the electronics. There is a thread about that somewhere on this sight. Use the search feature.

That being said, my son loves his. Even before I started modifying it.

Thanks, 1'll have to look at that carefully.
Probably go the BMX tires on all four wheels.

A circuit board? Great...
I wasn't planning 18v for a while, and even then it was going to be a "boost" button, not constant.
I was thinking of rewiring the throttle to be the boost, and putting another switch for hi/low on the body.
I can't figure out where to put a brake pedal though.

And ain't that the whole point?
Did you make him wear a helmet at 12v?

The current circuit board basically has a couple of relays, triggered by the twist throttle, that switch the motors between high/low. In effect it is already acting like a "boost" switch. On my KFX, I switched to a scooter controller with a true variable thottle on the handgrip and rewired the old foot throttle pedal to be a brake pedal.

If you don't want to go that heavy into modifications, but want faster speed, I would add a 6v battery in series to the existing 12v, but make sure that the circuit board is only getting power tapped just from the 12v battery (for the relay coils, you would still send 18v through the relay load connections to the motors) and have low be 9v and high be 18v and not worry about a seperate high/low switch.

As for the helmet, the KFX at 12v and even 18v isn't that fast. Maybe I should be more worried, but I have yet to make my kids wear a helmet on anything except the razor motorcycle.

That's a neat idea, once he gets a little better at driving this one.
I felt bad when I saw the dangling plug, and realized that the previous owner hadn't used high speed at all.

I make mine wear his on his bicycle. Even with training wheels, he's done some interesting falls.
It helps that Mommy and Daddy wear their helmets while riding bikes too.

Oh yeah. Saw one they wanted more for with the connector and battery gone. Told them I'd take it for free, and walked away.

I felt bad when I saw the dangling plug under the cowl, and realized that the previous owner probably hadn't used high speed at all.

I'd say about half of the curb finds I've come across haven't had the high speed enabled. I'm always tempted to knock on the peoples door and ask them if they would want to keep the vehicle if it was faster.

That's an idea.

One good thing about the high speed being disabled, you are almost guaranteed to have good gearboxes.

I can picture them being amazed - as long as they don't realize what you're doing....

Put a Batman Atomic Battery sticker on the stock battery...

OK - I had a few hours to work on this today, while the my wife took the boys to a neighbor's first birthday party.

After JD took off on his Enforcer and refused to stop a few weekends ago, my wife ordered all vehicles equipped with remote kill switches.

I picked up 5 of these remote switches:
http://www.lightobject.com/1CH-RF-Remote-Control-TxRx-Kit-P109.aspx

They're only a hundred miles from me, and the receiver can be programmed to respond to any transmitter.

I forgot to take a picture showing the stock wiring - here's after I started.
I used Taz's trick of 1" long #10 bolts for a connection point.

50.32 KB

Right to left, it's 12+, 12-, and switched.
I wish I'd left a little more room between them though.

36.21 KB

I put together each wiring assembly on the floor. I've go to get either fully insulated terminals, or bare crimp terminals and use heatshrink.

47.96 KB

44.32 KB

46.64 KB

I used a lighted switch to show the "ignition" was on.

47.76 KB

I had to cut a larger hole in the green shell to access the plugs

42.64 KB

31.76 KB

Since I wasn't going to rewire all the existing white, I used a Sharpie marker to draw a black stripe on all the white wires that weren't switched off at the ignition.

35.2 KB

Final hookup before installing it - everything worked great!
I was able to tap into the red wire from between the gas pedal and the forward/reverse switch easily - it ran up inches away from the relay to begin with!

59.15 KB

But it did get a little more crowded once I put the green shell back on.

51.92 KB

The red override light looks like it belonged there from the beginning

35.58 KB

34.23 KB

Ran into a problem removing the battery to charge it - the new rats nest of wires got in the way of my fingers.

So I lengthened the power cables, stuck a 2x4 underneath the battery, and reversed it. Now there's plenty of room to reach the plug, and to hook up the charger.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.

GSEric69 has a good photo of how he took the slop out of the steering here:

Alright so maybe I am slow because I have been up so long, but I am not following exactly how you wired the kill switch? Is the kill switch and the toggle switch fed through a relay that activates power? Both of them have to be on to make it work? Do you have a diagram of how you hooked it up?

The toggle switch is just to prevent the battery from dying when it's not in use. If I only switched the remote circuit, JD would figure out real fast how to override it.
This way, if the switch is off, nothing works.
I had planned on using a key switch, like in the Escalade, but that week the boy lost one of the only two keys. So I used the toggle instead. One of these days I'll swap it to a set of keyed alike I picked up on eBay...

The remote kill part of the circuit is pretty standard

15.41 KB

The gray background is just so that I can show WHITE wires.
I use a sharpie to draw a line on the white wires before the switch - it helps keep me from getting lost in the spaghetti!
